Summary of the June 2023, AJCA, NAJ Board Meetings

The summer meetings of the American Jersey Cattle Association (AJCA) and the National All-Jersey Inc. (NAJ) Board of Directors were held June 20 and June 21, 2023, at the Stoney Creek Hotel and Conference Center, Lacrosse, Wisconsin. Actions taken are as summarized.

AJCA-NAJ-AJSC Financial Outlook

The 2022 year-end audited financial statements for the companies, the auditor reviewed the 2022 Research Fund, and the year-end financial summary for Scholarship and Special Funds were presented and approved.

Unaudited financial reports, through May 31, 2023, were reviewed, showing:

Market value of investments at May 31, 2023, was $6,602,041

Transfer of Embryo Ownership Fees Increase

Effective July 1, 2023, a service fee of $10 (in addition to the transfer fee) will be implemented to all Transfer of Embryo Ownership processing that requires additional staff time to process. A $15 fee (in addition to transfer fees) will be assessed to breeders when manually adding a Canadian animal to the USJersey database for transfer of to ownership in the U.S.

Also effective July 1, 2023, will be an increase in rush fees for processed papers to $10 per piece.

JNS Haplotype Test Reporting

Beginning in July 2023, Jersey Neuropathy of Splayed Forelimbs (JNS) test results will be made available to owners weekly.

On the AJCA Performance Pedigrees and Progeny Reports, JNS status will be recorded as follows

Green Book Modifications

The board voted to list only Generation Count {4} and Breed Base Representation (BBR) animals in the printed and online Green Book. The lists will include A.I. Marketed Bulls; A, F, and G Bulls; A and F Bulls and G Bulls. 

For the females updated lists will include Top 1% JPI Genomic and Traditional Females (combined); Top 500 Genomic Tested Females and Top 200 Genomic and Traditional Polled Females (combined).

Northeast All Breeds Spring Show Recognition

Beginning in 2024, the Northeast All Breeds Spring Jersey Show will be recognized as a regional show by the AJCA and receive $1,000 for costs associated with junior show management and premiums. In order to maintain regional status, the show will need to meet the following criteria: 
    1.    A minimum of 130 Jerseys exhibited in the open show, based on the most recent three-year rolling average;
    2.    All animals be recorded by the American Jersey Cattle Association in the Herd Register or with Generation Count 4 or greater, or by Jersey Canada with registry status of 93.75% and greater; and 
    3.    The host show/exposition adopt and enforce the Show Ring Code of Ethics (2015) of the Purebred Dairy Cattle Association (PDCA). All cows in milk must be subject to ultrasound and milk sample testing

Status of regional shows is reviewed annually.

Nation All-Jersey Recap

The board received an update from General Manager Erick Metzger on the upcoming Federal Order hearings and the role NAJ will have in those meetings. One of the topics includes updating skim solids factors annually. 

NAJ has filed comments as well with the Food and Drug Administration regarding the labeling of plant-based milk alternatives. 

Charlie Garrison, The Garrison Group LLC, Washington, D.C., updated the NAJ board on the congressional fly-in for the boards in March. He also gave udpates on the new Farm Bill, Dairy Pride Act, international trade and immigration reform. 

Jersey Marketing Service (JMS) reported on a successful spring sale schedule. Private treaty sales have been increasing throughout the spring and JMS has fall orders as well to fill.
